New York, N.Y. - The Long Island men's and women's track and field teams opened 2011 with an appearance at the Metro Coaches Invitational at the Armory in New York, N.Y. Senior Corryl Boyd and sophomore Brian Richards both turned in strong performances for the Blackbirds on the men's side, while junior Jazmin Waller and sophomore Jessie Gaines impressed for the women.
Boyd finished the 60-meter dash third overall, racing to a time of 6.93. In the 500-meter dash, junior Robert Barnes took fourth place, running at 1:04.42. He was directly followed by senior Samuel Egadu, who ran a 1:04.45.
In the 4x800-meter relay, the quartet of sophomore Kenneth Wallace Whitfield, sophomore Chris Welch, senior Elmo Neckles, and senior Vincent Gangemi raced in a 7:58.94 and fourth place. Richards took third in the long jump, leaping to a mark of 7.21m. Sophomore Wilmot Stubblefield also put in a strong performance, earning a mark of 6.89m, good enough for fifth place.
Waller, a recent winner of the Northeast Conference Athlete of the Week award, earned second in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.98. Gaines wasn't far behind, running a 25.58, good enough for fourth place. Senior Christine Jones was fifth in the 500-meter run, clocking in at 1:17.93. In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Tricia Beckles took second, running a 9.35. Freshman Camille Thomas took fourth in the same event, running a 9.66.
The women showed depth in the jumps with a number of top-five finishes in the three events. Waller took fourth in the high jump, with a leap of 1.60m. Gaines took the top spot in the long jump with a mark of 5.82m. Jones and sophomore Amber Mitchell took third and fourth, jumping 5.51m and 5.42m respectively. Senior Danay Spencer leapt to a mark of 11.69m in the triple jump, earning her second place, while junior Torrie Saunders earned a mark of 11.61m, good enough for third.
The Blackbirds are back at the Armory on January 14 for the NYU Gotham Cup.
