Track Opens Outdoor Slate in Puerto Rico

The Long Island University men's and women's track and field teams opened up their 2011 outdoor slate at the 6th Annual Spring Break Classic, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The event featured a number of Caribbean schools and well as teams from Albany, Kansas, Bethune-Cookman, Houston and Army.
 
For the women, junior Jessie Gaines continued her trend of strong performances from the indoor season, taking third place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.38. The mark is already better than her previous best from last season, a 24.86. Gaines also took fourth in the long jump, leaping to a mark of 5.78 meters.
 
Juniors Jazmin Waller and Kadisha Wickham also contributed points for Long Island, with Waller earning sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.71 meters and Wickham taking eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.16. Waller and Wickham combined with sophomore Amber Mitchell and junior Torrie Saunders for the 4x100-meter relay, where the team raced to third and a time of 46.48.
 
Saunders took eighth in the triple jump, leaping to a mark of 11.43 meters, while senior Danay Spencer  was fourth with a jump of 11.43 meters. Freshman Camille Thomas earned a ninth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 14.84, while sophomore Tricia Beckles was eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.42. In the 3000-meter run, senior Robin Renahan was sixth, clocking in at 10:50, lowering her 2010 best mark by over a minute.
 
On the men's side, senior  Samuel Egadu  raced to a 21.86 in the 200-meter dash, coming in seventh, while sophomore Robert Barnes was just out of the top ten with a time of 22.45.
 
Sophomore Rogers Kipruto  was sixth in the 3000-meter dash with a time of 8:50.54, while junior Paul Morton  took fourth in the triple jump, leaping to a mark of 13.54 meters.
 
LIU competes next at the Texas Relays April 6-9, and heads to the Bennie Benson Memorial Invitational in Moon Township, Pa. on April 10.
