Track Impresses at Wagner Quad Meet

The Long Island men's and women's track and field squads were out at Wagner on Wednesday afternoon for the Wagner “Quad” Meet featuring the Wagner Seahawks and the St. Francis (N.Y.) Terriers. The Blackbirds showed strength in a number of events on both sides including the shot put, 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash.

The Blackbirds dominated the women's shot put, with senior Christine Jones tossing an 8.46m for first and junior Kadisha Wickham recording a 7.46m for second place. Long Island went 1-2-3 in the women's 100-meter dash, with junior Jazmin Waller clocking in at 14.2, classmate Torrie Saunders clocking in at 14.6, and rookie Camille Thomas recording a 15.03.

Junior Jessie Gaines took gold in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in 60.6. In the long jump, senior Danay Spencer was third with a leap of 4.77m, while sophomore Amber Mitchell was fourth with a mark of 4.70m. The women's 4x800-meter relay team was second with a time of 10:04.3.

On the men's side, sophomores Kenneth Wallace Whitfield and Chris Welch tied for second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.13. Sophomore Brian Richards took gold in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in with a 15.4.

Senior Corryl Boyd was fourth in the men's shot put, recording a mark of 9.02m. The men's 4x800-meter relay team raced to a 7:57.3.

The Long Island track and field team is back in action on Saturday for the Metropolitan Championships in Palisades Park, N.J.
