BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw in double overtime against league-leading Quinnipiac Sunday, in a Northeast Conference matchup. LIU's Jakeem Johnson and Tanner Sica each scored a goal on Alumni Day, while senior goalkeeper Nathan Stockie was named Colin Fowles Alumni Day MVP with 15 saves in goal. With the tie, the Blackbirds are now 2-7-2 overall, and 1-1-1 in NEC play.
The first half saw numerous shots from both teams, as the Bobcats outshot the Blackbirds, 10-6. Senior goalie Nathan Stockie was outstanding in net, as he recorded seven saves, shutting out Quinnipiac in the first half. The two teams went into the break locked at 0-0.
Six minutes into the second half, LIU was able to land two quick goals to go up on the Bobcats. In the 51st minute, LIU scored the first goal of the match when Johnson put a header in, off a cross from teammate Rob Schroback. Two minutes later, the Blackbirds added another goal off a free kick. Freshman midfielder Tanner Sica received teammate Nick Cavaretta's cross, and had a beautiful header into the net, to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team.
In the 70th minute, Quinnipiac's Simon Hinde found the back of the net on a free kick, putting Quinnipiac on the board, 2-1. With time winding down in the second half, the Bobcats picked up the pace, attacking Stockie in net with shot after shot. The equalizer landed in the 88th minute, when Robbie McLarney set up teammate Stevenson Hawkey on a corner kick. Hawkey launched the ball from the top right corner of the box and it sailed past Stockie to tie the match up at 2-2 with two minutes of regulation left to play.
In the first overtime, the Bobcats outshot the Blackbirds, 5-1, but Stockie recorded two saves and kept LIU in the game with his aggressive play. Johnson had an opportunity to win the game for the Blackbirds in the 93rd minute, but the shot went just wide. Still tied at 2-2 at the end of the first overtime, the two squads went to double overtime.
The second overtime was much of the same as LIU outshot Quinnipiac, 3-2, but no goals were scored.
Johnson finished the game with a team-high five shots, while Sica had four shots in the match. In the end, the Bobcats outshot the Blackbirds, 29-13.
