Piscataway, N.J. – The Blackbirds competed in the Metropolitan Championships on Saturday. The LIU jumpers had a solid day, with senior Jessie Gaines setting a new school record in the long jump while classmate Amire Solomon set a new school record in the triple jump. Both teams finished fifth overall.
Gaines leapt to a mark of 6.45 meters in the long jump. The mark surpasses the one set by Camilla Harris in 2003, at 5.94 meters. Solomon took first in the men's triple jump with a leap of 15.67 meters, surpassing teammate Wilmot Stubblefield's mark of 15.54 meters set earlier this season.
In the 100-meter dash, freshman Bryanna Williams was fifth with a time of 12.09, while senior Torrie Saunders was seventh with a time of 12.14. Junior Amber Mitchell finished tenth with a time of 12.43.
Senior Jazmin Waller took fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.38, and senior Charlene Fuller clocked in at 24.58, good enough for sixth. Senior Kadisha Wickham crossed the line in 57.18 in the 400-meter dash, earning eighth.
In the 100-meter hurdles, senior Jessie Gaines grabbed the top spot with a time of 13.87. Sophomore Camille Thomas was eighth with a time of 15.37. Sophomore Marielena Rivera was tenth in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 1:06.65.
The quartet of freshman Shakia Williams, Wickham, Mitchell and Rivera took fourth in the 4x400-meter relay. Waller was sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.66 meters. The Blackbirds placed four athletes in the top ten in the triple jump: Gaines (12.75m), Saunders (12.03m), Thomas (11.28m) and junior Jasmine Carter (11.27m).
On the men's side, senior Robert Barnes took sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.82. Barnes also posted a strong performance in the 200-meter dash, taking second with a time of 21.8. Senior Jarenn Stewart finished sixth with a time of 22.01 while junior Jamal Roberts was right behind, in seventh, with a time of 22.04. Junior Brian Richards was tenth in the same event, with a time of 22.05.
In the 400-meter dash, freshman Andi Augustin crossed the line in 50.26, good enough for eighth. Junior Rogers Kipruto picked up third in the 5,000-meter run, earning a time of 15:29.23. Junior Dwayne Layne finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.70, while junior Kenneth Wallace Whitfield with sixth with a time of 56.29.
Richards grabbed second in the long jump with a leap of 7.45 meters, while Stewart was third with a mark of 7.33 meters. Stubblefield took sixth with a mark of 6.69 meters.
The Blackbirds return to action on April 18 for the Wagner Quad meet at Northeast Conference rival Wagner in Staten Island.
