Brooklyn, N.Y. – Seniors Jazmin Waller, Jessie Gaines and Amire Solomon have all been honored by the Northeast Conference for outstanding performances over the weekend at the Metropolitan Championships. Waller is the NEC Women's Track Athlete of the Week, Gaines is the Co-NEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, and Solomon is the NEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Waller sprinted to the 200-meter dash title at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships and solidified her lead over the NEC while doing so. Waller crossed the line in 24.38, a personal-best time that leads the NEC by 0.19 second. Waller's time is better than the 24.46 she ran last year at the NEC Outdoor Championship to claim second place.
Gaines took gold in both the long and triple jumps at this weekend's meet, rewriting two school records in the process. In the triple jump, her mark of 12.75 meters breaks the mark of 12.5 meters she set last season. Gaines leapt to a mark of 6.45 meters in the long jump, shattering the record of 5.94 meters set by recent LIU Brooklyn Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee Camilla Harris in 2003. Not only do both distances lead the NEC, but Gaines currently ranks tenth in the NCAA Division I in the long jump and 25th in the triple jump.
Solomon won the Metropolitan title in the triple jump and has the potential to add NEC Outdoor record holder to his resume in the near future. The veteran Blackbird triple-jumped 15.67 meters (51' 5”) on his way to a gold medal at the Metropolitan Championships. Recording a mark that moved him ahead of teammate Wilmot Stubblefield for first place on the NEC leader board, Solomon established himself as a threat to the meet record that Robert Morris' Nasim Siddeeq set at the 2008 NEC Outdoor Championships. Now one of two 51-foot triple-jumpers on LIU's roster, Solomon currently sits 15th amongst all of NCAA Division I.
The Blackbirds are back in action tomorrow on Staten Island for the Wagner Quad meet.
