Senior Jazmin Waller capped a successful senior season by earning Most Valuable Performer and Most Outstanding Track Performer at the 2012 Northeast Conference Championships. Both the men's and the women's outdoor track and field squads placed second overall.

After setting a new NEC meet record on the first day of competition, Waller scored points in the high jump, 100-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. The Atco, N.J. native took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.55, and was second in the 100, clocking in at 12.11. In the 100-meter hurdles, Waller was second in a 1-2-3 sweep with a time of 14.13, and took fourth in the high jump after clearing 1.7 meters.

The LIU seniors were the story of the day, where senior Jessie Gaines picked up a pair of golds in the triple jump (12.29m) and 100-meter hurdles (13.77).  Gaines was fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.95.

Senior Torrie Saunders also scored a number of points for the Blackbirds, coming in second in the triple jump with a leap of 11.94 meters and third in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 14.18. Saunders was fifth in both the 100-meter (12.3) and 200-meter dash (25.1) events as well.

Classmate Kadisha Wickham took second in the 400-meter dash with a score of 56.74, and eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.61.  Senior Charlene Fuller was second in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line with a time of 24.65.

Freshman Katrina Anderson was seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.03, while classmate Brittany McClain earned the same place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.93. Freshman Bryanna Williams and junior Amber Mitchell took third and fourth in the 100-meter dash, respectively. Williams clocked in at 12.21, while Mitchell earned a time of 12.28.

The 4x100-meter relay took the top spot with a time of 46.87, while the 4x400-meter relay team was second with a time of 3:48.67.

The men's team also had a wealth of success over the weekend. The Blackbirds scored major points in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter dash events.

After setting a new NEC record on Saturday, senior Corryl Boyd held onto the top spot, crossing the line in 47.88. Junior Jamal Roberts was second with a time of 48.00, while senior Robert Barnes was fifth with a time of 48.47.

In the 100-meter dash, senior Nickolei Mahlung earned a gold with a time of 10.56. Senior Jarenn Stewart finished third with a time of 10.73. Freshman Mikhail Williamson and junior Brian Richards went 5-6, running times of 10.89 and 10.94, respectively.

Mahlung lead a 3-4-5-6 run in the 200-meter dash. The Brooklyn product crossed the line in 21.8, while Roberts (21.83), Barnes (21.92) and Williamson (22.09) were close behind. Stewart was the final point scorer in the event, earning a time of 22.42.

Junior Dwayne Layne took the top spot in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 52.92. Classmate Kenneth Wallace Whitfield was seventh in the 800-meter run, earning a time of 1:56.34. Both the 4x100-meter (41.22) and 4x400-meter (3:15.21) relays came in first.

Senior Amire Solomon and junior Wilmot Stubblefield went 1-2 in the triple jump. Solomon leapt to a mark of 15.59 meters while Stubblefield hit 14.92 meters.

Qualifying members of both teams will head to the ECAC/IC4A Championships next weekend at the Weaver Track and Field Stadium in Princeton, N.J.
