NEW BRITAIN, CONN. - The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team fell in its Northeast Conference opener at Central Connecticut Friday night, 2-0. Junior forward David Nuernberg contributed three shots on the night.
The Blue Devils controlled the shots in the first half with nine attempts, compared to the Blackbird's two.
Sophomore midfielder Nahuel Medina's first shot for LIU Brooklyn in the eighth minute was just wide of the goal. The Blackbirds would not shoot again until the 36th minute, when Nuernberg had a shot blocked.
Central Connecticut was first to get on the board just before the end of the first half, when Conor Qualter finished Freddy Metellus' cross into the right side of the goal.
The Blue Devils continued their offensive onslaught with three straight shots to start the second half before Medina launched another wide shot in the 51st minute.
Junior defender Matt Mummert then took the first shot on goal for the Blackbirds four minutes later, but Blue Devils goalkeeper Joseph Abel was there to make the save.
The teams continued to trade the ball back and forth, and sophomore midfielder Tanner Sica and Nuernberg had attempts in the 76th and 77th minute, but in the 78th minute CCSU was able to take possession, as Eddy Bogle scored the second goal of the game.
The Blackbirds turned up the tempo toward the end of the second half, firing four shots in an attempt to get on the board, but could not find the back of the net.
Senior goalkeeper John Connolly made five saves on the day.
The Blackbirds are back in action next Friday, Oct. 18 when they host Robert Morris at LIU Field at 6:00 p.m.
