BROOKLYN, N.Y. - A goal in the 79th minute from freshman Kevin Lockhart saved the day for the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team on Friday night at LIU Field, in a pivotal conference match against Bryant. The Blackbirds battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw with the Bulldogs.
Bryant controlled the shots through the match, 22-10, but redshirt freshman goalkeeper Logan Keys made 11 saves to keep the Bulldogs from coming away with the win.
The first shot of the match was not taken until the 10th minute, a Bryant header on goal. The Blackbirds would not take a shot until the 19th minute, when junior forward Brice Merwine had an excellent opportunity. Bryant goalkeeper Chris Knaub was able to make the save, however.
Junior defender Jacob Smith attempted a header shot moments later, but it fell wide, while freshman forward Nathan Stewart made an attempt on goal. The Bulldogs then managed two, before Connor Norat crossed the ball to find Lamar Brym for the first goal of the game and give the Bryant the 1-0 advantage in the 27th minute.
LIU Brooklyn managed to up its shots to six in the second half, but it was not until the 79th minute when Merwine pushed the ball up the field to find Lockhart, who sent the ball in the back of the net to put the Blackbirds on the board and right back into the match. This was Lockhart's second goal of the season, and Merwine's third assist.
Neither squad was able to get any opportunities for the duration of regulation. In the first overtime period, Bryant's Norat had two shots, but was unable to convert on either.
In the second overtime period, Bryant nearly took the victory when Keys came out of the net to try and make a save on a shot from Joseph DiMauro, but the ball went wide of the goal to keep the clock running. The Blackbirds also had a major chance after a corner kick gave Lockhart an opportunity for a header on goal, but Knaub punched the ball out.
Lockhart had three shots for the Blackbirds, while Stewart and Merwine each chipped in two.
LIU Brooklyn is back in action this Sunday when the team travels to Fairleigh Dickinson to take on the defending Northeast Conference champions at 3:00 p.m.
