TEANECK, N.J. – The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Fairleigh Dickinson, the defending Northeast Conference champion on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights outshot the Blackbirds, 19-2, while redshirt freshman goalkeeper Logan Keys had 9 saves for LIU Brooklyn.
A foul in the 19th minute gave Fairleigh Dickinson a golden opportunity, but the ball sailed above the crossbar to keep the Blackbirds out of trouble. The Knights continued to press up toward the LIU Brooklyn goal, but could not find the back of the net.
Brian Alumbaugh had a chance after a foul gave the Blackbirds a free kick 20 yards out, but Fairleigh Dickinson goalkeeper Jacob Lissek was able to grab the ball.
Fairleigh Dickinson outshot the Blackbirds 11-0 in the first half, but score remained 0-0 after the first half. Keys had three saves.
Sophomore midfielder Tanner Sica had the first shot of the game for the Blackbirds in the 48th minute, but Lissek made the save. Alumbaugh attempted a shot five minutes later, but the ball fell wide of the net.
The Knights were able to get on the board in the second half, however. In the 62nd minute, Simon Doherty scored an assist down the right side from Nico Wright.
Fairleigh Dickinson and the Blackbids continued to battle back and forth for the remainder of the game, but the Knights went on to win their first conference match of the season, 1-0.
The Blackbirds are back in action next Sunday when they travel to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m.
