BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn sophomore Tanner Sica was named to the Men's Soccer All-Northeast Conference Second Team, it was announced at the annual NEC Tournament banquet on Thursday evening.
Sica, a midfielder, led the Blackbirds to a 5-10-2 (2-4-1 NEC) record this season and to a fifth place finish in the conference standings. LIU Brooklyn defeated second-place Saint Francis U. and Robert Morris, while tying with Bryant and narrowly missed qualifying for the NEC championship.
The Toms River, N.J. native started all 17 games for LIU Brooklyn, registering 35 shots to lead the team, along with 13 on goal. He also tied for eighth in the league with 2.06 shots per game.
Sica was monumental in helping LIU to both its road wins this season, including the teams first victory of the year on Sept. 13 at Manhattan, when he buried a penalty kick in the 74th minute to put the Blackbirds up 2-0.
He again came up clutch in a major win for LIU Brooklyn against Fairfield. An own goal gave the Blackbirds the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, but the Stags found the equalizer in the 42nd. With less than two minutes remaining in the match, Sica, for the first assist of his college career, crossed to Kevin Lockhart, who put the ball away as the Blackbirds went on to win the match.
Sica twice had the most shots in a game for the Blackbirds, taking six against both George Washington and La Salle. He also managed four shots on goal against the Explorers.
He is the first men's soccer player to be named to an All-NEC team since Steve Jakubowski and Adam Janssen were both named to the second team in 2011.
