SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 7-0 sweep of Minnesota State Wednesday morning. The Blackbirds did not drop a set on the way to beating the Mavericks in every singles and doubles match-up.
LIU opened the match with three quick wins in doubles, dropping only three games along the way. In the No.1 spot, sophomore Sanne Louwers and senior Taysha Blessington improved to 5-0 in dual matches, as they beat Shealyn Bakke and Brandi Dohmen, 8-0. At No. 2, senior Aleksandra Pavlovic and Katya Yegoreychenko defeated Kelly Lechowski and Sarah McCann, 8-2, while Brittany Thompson and Lisa Maas picked up a win at No.3, beating Alexis Ronney and Hailey Robb, 8-1.
The strong play continued for the Blackbirds through singles, as none of the LIU players dropped a set, and two went without losing a single game. Blessington had a dominant win in the No.2 singles spot, defeating Lechowski, 6-0, 6-0, and Yegoreychenko also shut out her opponent at No.4, beating Bakke, 6-0, 6-0. Pavlovic was nearly perfect at No.5, as she beak Alexis Haakedhal, 6-1, 6-0, and Louwers beat Dohmen in the No.1 spot, 6-1, 6-0.
Maas and Thompson added wins at Nos. 3 and 6, with identical 6-1, 6-4 scores, Maas defeated McCann, while Thompson beat Monica Sanvik at 6.
Up next for the Blackbirds is their final match of the spring break trip. LIU will take on Colgate in Puerto Rico, Friday, March 15 at 8:30 a.m.
