BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team (6-1 overall) opens Northeast Conference play Thursday afternoon, when they host Monmouth. The match against the Hawks, slated to begin at 1 p.m., will be played indoors at Queens College.
Last Time Out
The Blackbirds will be looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season, as LIU fell to St. John's on the 22nd, 6-1. St. John's took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2, before notching singles wins in every spot but No.4. Katya Yegoreychenko was the lone Blackbirds to get a win, as she beat Gvantsa Robakidze, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Celebrating the Seniors
In what will be the last home match of the season, LIU Brooklyn will celebrate its two seniors Thursday afternoon. Co-captains and both four-year members of the team, the Blackbirds will honor Aleksandra Pavlovic and Taysha Blessington before the match.
Scouting the Hawks
Monmouth has yet to play a spring dual match. The Hawks had their season opener schedule for Monday, March 25 at Fairfield, but that match was postponed due to weather. So Monmouth comes into the match with a clean slate.
The Hawks were picked to finish eighth in the preseason NEC poll, and went 2-7 in fall dual matches. Monmouth beat Rider (6-1) and Wagner (4-2), but fell to Fairleigh Dickinson (7-0), Bryant (7-0) and Sacred Heart (7-0).
Up Next
LIU Brooklyn will head north to take on Sacred Heart, in the only other regular-season NEC dual match for the Blackbirds, Tuesday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
