QUEENS, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team opened the Northeast Conference season in style Thursday afternoon, as the Blackbirds swept league opponent Monmouth, 7-0. The Blackbirds won all three doubles matches with ease, and did not drop a set in singles, to take the win from the Hawks.
In doubles, the Blackbirds cruised to the point with ease. The first team to win was the duo of Lisa Maas and Nancy Zonneveld, who beat the Monmouth pair of Sarah Turner and Liz D'Arcy, 8-1. Taysha Blessington and Sanne Louwers had an 8-2 win in the No.1 spot, while Aleksandra Pavlovic and Katya Yegoreychenko also won 8-2, in the No.2 spot.
Singles also saw quick wins for the Blackbirds, as LIU did not drop a single set. Blessington beat Nicole Lippers in the No.1 singles spot, 6-0, 6-1, while Louwers defeated Brooke Verdiglione, 6-1, 6-0 at No.2. Maas had a second set tiebreaker, but pulled through to beat Ashley Sandler, 6-1, 7-6(3), while Yegoreychenko didn't even drop a game at No.4, beating Dana Ferrari, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Aleksandra Pavlovic also went without dropping a game in the No.5 spot, beating Sarah Turner, 6-0, 6-0. And Zonneveld made it a sweep, beating Emily Ellis at No.6, 6-0, 6-2.
Up next for LIU (7-1, 1-0 NEC) is an NEC road match, as the Blackbirds will travel to take on Sacred Heart, Tuesday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
