RAHWAH, N.J. – The LIU Brooklyn women's track and field team finished in third place at the Metropolitan Championships on Saturday, with 108.50 team points, behind winner St. John's (160 pts) and Fordham (110 pts). The Blackbirds had four first-place finishes, and multiple top-8 performances.
Freshman Shanice Grant won the 100 meter hurdle event with time of 14.06, while junior Camille Thomas also qualified for the finals of the event, placing seventh in 14.95 seconds.
Freshman Kyaira Wright-Harmon alos brought home a first place finish for LIU, as she won the high jump with ease, clearing 1.71m, well ahead of the rest of the field. Wright-Harmon had a strong day in field events, as she was also LIU's top place finisher in the long jump, where she placed second with a jump of 5.44m.
The long jump was one of LIU's best events of the day, as four different athletes scored points for the Blackbirds. Behind Wright-Harmon, freshman Ja'Mesha Richard finished fourth with a jump of 5.31m, senior Jasmine Carter jumped a 5.28m for sixth, and senior Amber Mitchell came in seventh with a final jump of 5.12m.
Carter also jumped well in the triple jump, winning the event with a final jump of 11.61m.
Continuing LIU's domination in field events, senior Dotte Vea won the hammer throw, and was part of a 2-3 finish in the shot put to score major points for the Blackbirds. Vea won the hammer throw by just .01m, with a field best of 49.96. She and sophomore Niteesa Brooks also earned major points in the shot, as Vea took second with a throw of 11.73, and Brooks came in third with a distance of 11.65m.
The Blackbirds also had several top-8 finishes, led by sophomore Katrina Anderson. Anderson finished third in the 800m run with a time of 2:16.62. In the 100 meter dash, sophomore Bryanna Williams placed fourth with a time of 12.15, while Richard took fifth in 12.47 seconds. In the 400 meter hurdles, sophomore Brittany McClain ran a 1:06.23 (sixth place), while Grant led the Blackbirds' charge in the 200 meter dash with her time of 25.65 seconds, good for seventh.
LIU also scored points in the relay events, as the 4x100 meter relay team placed second, crossing the finish line in 47.20, while the 4x400 meter relay team ran 3:55.10, good for third place.
