BRONX, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team dropped its final match of the regular season to local rival Fordham in the Bronx Sunday, 5-2. The Rams took the doubles point and four singles matches to clinch the win, in a closely contested contest.
Fordham won all three doubles spots to sweep the Blackbirds and take the point. The No.3 match-up of
Lisa Maas and
Brittany Thompson vs. Angelika Dabu and Julie Leong finished first, as the Rams won, 8-4. Both the matches at Nos.1 and 2 were battles, that went down tot he final games.
At No. 2 doubles, Anika Novacek and Bella Genkina beat
Katya Yegoreychenko and
Aleksandra Pavlovic, 8-6, while Fordham beat
Taysha Blessington and
Sanne Louwers in the No.1 spot, also by a score of 8-6.
Singles saw the Rams go up, 2-0 early on, when junior
Brittany Thompson retired in the No.6 spot, down 5-0. Sophomore
Katya Yegoreychenko was next to fall in the No.3 spot, to Dabu, 6-2, 6-3.
Down 3-0, the Blackbirds were just one point from losing the match. But LIU rallied back to win the next two points and stay in the match. In the No.5 spot, senior
Aleksandra Pavlovic beat Julie Leong, 6-3, 6-3, and then junior
Lisa Maas made it 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Genkina at No. 4. But the Rams clinched the win not long after.
Senior
Taysha Blessington lost in the No.2 spot to Sarah Ali, 6-3, 6-4, and Fordham had clinched the win. The Rams made it 5-2 with a three set win at No.1, where Amy Simidian beat sophomore
Sanne Louwers, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.
With the loss, the Blackbirds finish the regular season 9-3 overall, and 3-0 in the Northeast Conference. Up next for the Blackbirds is the NEC Tournament, April 19-21.
