WEST WINSOR, N.J. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team cruised to a win Friday morning in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Northeast Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, as the #3-seeded Blackbirds defeated #6 seed Saint Francis (Pa.), 4-0. With the win, LIU advances to the semifinals, where they will take on #2 seed Quinnipiac.
The Blackbirds jumped out to an early lead over the Red Flash, taking the doubles point with ease. Senior Aleksandra Pavlovic and sophomore Katya Yegoreychenko had an 8-2 win in the No.2 doubles spot, beating Shivani Patel and Lucy Jasso. And senior Taysha Blessington and sophomore Sanne Louwers clinched the point at the No.1 doubles spot, where they beat Rafaela Panizza and Alex Sachs, 8-4. At No.3 doubles, Lisa Maas and Nancy Zonneveld led their SFU opponents 7-3, when the match was suspended because the point had been decided.
LIU finished off the Red Flash with three wins in singles. At No.1, Louwers beat Panizza, 6-2, 6-1 to make it 2-0 LIU, while Pavlovic made it 3-0 with her 6-2, 6-2 win over Danielle Gryckiewicz at No.5 singles. And Blessington clinched it with her win in the No.2 spot, where she beat Patel, 6-3, 6-0.
Yegoreychenko led Jasso at No.3 singles, 6-2, 2-1 when the match was called, while Mass led Sachs, 6-3, 3-2 at No.4, and Zonneveld was in her third set with Camila Diaz at No.6, 4-6, 6-0, 0-1.
With the win, LIU improves to 10-3 overall this season, and 4-0 in conference matches. The Blackbirds advance to face #2 seed Quinnipiac, Saturday, April 20th at 9 a.m.
