WEST POINT, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team lost a close match to local rival Army Friday afternoon, 4-3. The Blackbirds won the doubles point, but Army was able to take four of the six singles matches to clinch the win.
The Blackbirds took two quick doubles matches to go up early on the Black Knights. Sophomore Katya Yegoreychenko and senior Aleksandra Pavlovic had the first win in the No.2 spot, beating their Army opponents, 8-3. From there, senior Taysha Blessington and sophomore Sanne Louwersclinched the point with a win in the No.1 doubles spot, winning 8-4. Army's lone doubles win came at No.3, where Jamila Paul and Alyssa Hanson beat Lisa Maas and Nancy Zonneveld, 8-6.
In singles, LIU's wins came at Nos. 1 and 6, both in third set tiebreakers. Louwers beat Erin Colton after dropping the first set, 2-6, 7-6(4), 11-9, and Zonneveld beat Iliev at No.6, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6.
Army took the other four singles wins in straight sets. Paul beat Blessington in the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 6-3, while Eva Sung beat Yegoreychenko at No.3, 6-2, 6-1. At No.4, Maas was defeated by Carolyn Pitman, 6-1, 6-4, while Pavlovic fell at No.5 to Gabriella Spindler, 6-3, 6-0.
Up next for the Blackbirds is the rescheduled Sacred Heart match, Tuesday, April 9 at 3 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
