MORAGA, CALIF. - The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Saint Mary's Sunday. Junior forward David Nuernberg tallied three of the Blackbirds five shots, including one on goal, in the loss.
In the scoreless first half, LIU struck first in the 10th minute with a shot from sophomore Tanner Sica that fell just wide of the goal. Saint Mary's then answered with two shots in the 13th minute and 15th minute.
The Blackbirds had two opportunities in the 16th and 20th minute from Nuernberg and sophomore Nahuel Medina, but both were blocked. Both teams saw even play the next 15 minutes to finish the first half scoreless.
Saint Mary's came on strong in the second 45, registering five shots in the first 17 minutes before Ever De La Torre scored for the goals with a cross in front of the goal on an assist. The Blackbirds battled back with a shot on goal from Nuernberg in the 65th minute, before giving Medina a corner kick opportunity 10 seconds later.
Another shot by Nuernberg in the 68th minute sailed high, and the Gaels kept on the pressure, adding three more shots to their total. Saint Mary's Carlo Eikani scored a goal late in 82nd minute as the Gaels went on to claim the win, 2-0.
The Gaels outshot the Blackbirds 16-5. LIU Brooklyn goalkeeper John Connolly recorded four saves after playing all 90 minutes.
The Blackbirds return to Brooklyn for their home opener against George Washington this Friday, Sept. 6. Play begins at 6:00 p.m. at LIU Field.
