BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The duo of Tanner Sica and David Nuernberg gave La Salle goalkeeper John McCarthy some work on Wednesday night, totaling seven shots on goal, but the Blackbirds and Explorers ultimately settled for a 0-0 tie after 110 minutes of play at LIU Field.
Sica, a sophomore midfielder, upped his season shot total to 13 after recording six on the night, while Nuernberg, the junior forward, chipped in another four. Seven different Blackbirds took shots on Wednesday, though La Salle held the advantage 19-17.
Sica fired first for either team in the seventh minute. Nahuel Medina kicked one over the cross bar in the 16th minute before a foul on La Salle allowed Nuernberg to take a shot on goal a minute later. The Blackbirds traded shots with the Explorers until the end of the period to go into halftime scoreless.
Second half action mirrored the first. La Salle's Tom Baker got the action started quickly, taking a shot 45 minutes in. Sica took three of his four shots on goal, while LIU held the shot advantage 8-5 in the second half. Despite numerous opportunities, the score remained 0-0 at the end of regulation.
In the first overtime period, La Salle came out kicking, firing six shots in the 10 minutes, but the Pioneers were unable to convert. Senior goalkeeper John Connolly made two saves in the period.
In second overtime, the Blackbirds saw a shot from Brian Alumbaugh go just wide of the goal, before Connolly made another save two minutes later. A corner kick from Medina allowed Brice Merwine a chance, but the shot was blocked. LIU regained posession for another corner, and a second shot from Alumbaugh fell just wide again.
The Blackbirds were able to hold off the Explorers and finish with the tie, while Connolly earned his first shutout of the season.
LIU Brooklyn is back in action this Friday when the team takes on Manhattan in Riverdale at 7:00 p.m.
