BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Junior forward Brice Merwine scored his first goal of the season, but it two quick goals from Houston Baptist gave the Huskies the 2-1 edge over the Blackbirds on Friday at night at LIU Field.
Houston Baptist took 27 shots during the match to LIU Brooklyn's four, but strong defense from the Blackbirds kept the Huskies scoreless until the the 82nd minute.
The Huskies started off quick, firing six shots in the first 15 minutes of the game. LIU's first shot game in the 15th minute from sophomore midfielder Tanner Sica, who currently leads the Blackbirds.
Houston Baptist kept up its offensive onslaught, but Merwine broke up the Huskies' momentum in the 24th minute when a perfectly executed shot 30 yards out sailed past HBU goalkeeper George Kelley in the right corner of the net to give the Blackbirds a 1-0 advantage.
The Blackbirds held that advantage through the first period, despite the Huskies' 14 shot attempts. Their strong defense continued into the second half until a a corner kick from Thilo Borgmann put the ball in scoring opportunity for Tobenno Uzo to give Houston Baptist the equalizer.
Moments later, Uzo struck again on an assist from Ricky-Paul Mupier to put the Huskies up, 2-1. The Blackbirds attempted to battle their way back, but were unable to find the back of the net to give Houston Baptist the win.
Despite the loss, Logan Keys was outstanding in his first career start in goal for LIU Brooklyn. The redshirt freshman recorded nine saves on the day.
The Blackbirds next travel to the Columbia on Wednesday, Sept. 25 for a 7:00 p.m. match before again hitting the road to face Fairfield on Saturday, Sept, 28.
