Complete Draws
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team wrapped up its second tournament of the fall season Sunday, at the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y. The tournament featured some of the top teams on the east coast, including UConn, Marist, Illinois, Seton Hall and Albany, along with local rivals Fordham, St. Peter's, Bryant and Stony Brook.
In the A doubles bracket, juniors Sanne Louwers and Katya Yegoreychenko fell in the round of 32, 8-3 to Srna Stosljevic and Maxie Weinberg of UConn. The duo had more success in the back draw, winning in the first round with an injury walkover, and then beating Sarah Ali and Ellie Ball of Fordham, 8-3 in the quarterfinals.
In the B doubles bracket, senior Lisa Maas and junior Brittany Thompson paired up to take a first round win over a team from NEC rival Bryant. The Blackbirds beat Briana Leonard and Stephanie Sanyers, 8-6, before falling to Haley O'Conner and Carly Riney of Army in the round of 16, 8-2.
Freshman Isabella Wagener and junior Nancy Zonneveld also took part in the B doubles, and won their first round match. The duo beat Nicole Chis and Manu Leme of FDU, 8-4, before falling to the No.3 seed, Ally Hayley and Nan Porter of Army.
In the first singles bracket, Louwers had a first round win, beating Ellie Ball of Fordham, 6-3, 6-2. She advanced to face off against the top seed in the bracket, Alexis Casati from Illinois. Casati won to advance, beating Louwers 6-2, 6-3.
In the second singles round, senior Lisa Maas had an early loss to a league rival: Maas fell to FDU's Gisela Castany, 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round. In the back draw, Maas took on Ellie Taylor from host Army, falling 8-4.
The fourth singles bracket saw freshman Isabella Wagener competing. After a first round bye, she took on Lucia Radovic from St. Peter's, and had a resounding win, beating her 6-1, 6-0. She advanced to take on Kelly Daniel of host Army, and fell, despite a strong first set, 7-5, 6-3. Thompson was also competing in the fourth bracket, and fell in the first round to Bryant's Jovana Hadzi-Tanovic, 6-1, 6-3. In the back draw, she took on another Bulldog, Briana Leonard, and fell in a pro set, 8-2.
The tournament was the last one for the Blackbirds before they head north to take part in the ITA Regional championships. LIU will take part in the annual tournament, which features all of the Division I tennis programs in the East Region, October 17 to 22, in Cambridge, Mass.
