NEW YORK, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's track and field team completed their first competition of 2014 over the weekend, as the Blackbirds made the trip to The Armory for the Gotham Cup, hosted by New York University.
Sophomore Kyaira Wright-Harmon won her first event of the New Year, after recording a mark of 1.70m in the high jump to finish finish first in the event. LIU Brooklyn had a sucessful showing in the high jump with three athletes placing in the top-10, including sophomore Shanice Grant who tied for fourth and freshman Maria Luzon who was 10th.
Juniors Katrina Anderson and Bryanna Williams also posted strong performances for the Blackbirds, as Anderson was second place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.83, and Williams was third in the long jump with a leap of 5.53.
In the women's 60-meter dash, sophomore Anise Cuffee placed seventh in the finals with a time of 7.78, while sophomore Josephine Watson was 10th in preliminaries at 7.82.
Junior Marielena Rivera was the top finisher for the Blackbirds in the 400-meter dash, finishing 13th with a time of 1:00.48 while teammate sophomore Alea Stevens was not far behind in the 15th with a time of 1:00.69. In the 500-meter dash, Shakia Williams was 13th in 1:19.47.
The Blackbirds also competed in the 4x400 meter relay, with the squad taking seventh place in a time of 4:00.88.
LIU Brooklyn returns to action this weekend, with two meets at The Armory, the Great Dane Classic on Friday, Jan. 17 and the NYU Saturday Night Shootout the following day on Jan. 18.
