BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's bowling team made school history on Sunday, as the Blackbirds bowled their first ever 300 baker game at the final day of the Kutztown Invitational.
The 12 straight strikes came was the eighth baker 300 in NCAA women's bowling history and came during the sixth game of LIU's match with Monmouth on Sunday morning.
The No. 20 Blackbirds finished the Kutztown Invitational in 14th place and an 8-7 record after falling in close matches to No. 12 Sacred Heart, No. 18 Monmouth and No. 17 St. Francis Brooklyn during best-four-of-seven bracket play on the third day of the tournament.
Against the Pioneers, the Blackbirds dropped the first two games before surging back to take the next two, 199-175 and 233-171, but the team just fell in the final two, 165-175 and 180-197 to give Sacred Heart the win.
In the second match, LIU took the first game 205-193, while Monmouth won the following pair. The Blackbirds won the fourth, 202-133, before dropping the next to the Hawks. The Blackbirds came back with their perfect 300 to tie up the match, but Monmouth was able to win the final game and the match.
Finally, LIU fell short in another close match against St. Francis Brooklyn. The two teams traded games the entire way, with the decision coming at game seven. A 12-point difference gave the Terriers the 4-3 edge.
No. 2 UMES, who the Blackbirds defeated earlier in the tournament, won the Kutztown Invitational, followed by No. 7 Wisconsin-Whitewater, No. 8 Vanderbilt, No. 4 Fairleigh Dickinson and No. 5 Stephen F. Austin to round out the top-five.
Junior Brittany Hart was named to the All-Tournament Second Team after knocking down 1,241 total pins during traditional matches on the previous day.
Up next, the LIU Brooklyn competes at the Red Flash Invitational hosted by Saint Francis U., in Altoona, Pa. The three-day event runs from Friday, Jan. 31 to Sunday, Feb. 2.
