BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Northeast Conference announced its 2013 fall Team Sportsmanship Award winners Tuesday, as the the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team earned the honor in men's soccer.
The award program, which was instituted in 2008 by league presidents, are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
The Blackbirds finished the 2013 season with a 5-10-2 record. This includes a 2-4-1 mark within the NEC. The men's soccer team tied for a fifth place finish in conference play.
"The NEC Council of Presidents are fully committed to the values of good sportsmanship and competing with integrity," said Noreen Morris, NEC Commissioner. "On the Council's behalf, I'm proud to congratulate the coaches and student-athletes from these five institutions for being recognized by their peers as the teams that best epitomized those values."
