BROOKLYN, N.Y. – It was all LIU Brooklyn women's tennis, all weekend, at the 2014 Navy Blue and Gold Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland, as senior Sanne Louwers and sophomore Marine Dans both advanced to the finals of the Flight A Singles draw. Louwers took the title, earning LIU's first invitational top flight title of the season. The duo also advanced to the finals of the Flight A doubles bracket, finishing second overall.
Louwers began the tournament with a first round bye, then facing off with Malin Allgurin of Longwood. Louwers won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals. There, she took on Lucy Williams of Towson, winning in a tiebreaker, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5. Dans had three wins on her way to the finals. In round one, she defeated Sophie Barnard of Georgetown, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5, before advancing to take on Luize Strike of Seton Hall. She beat Strike, 6-4, 3-6, 11-9, and then beat Danea Jonjic of Delaware, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, to qualify for the finals. The two Blackbirds faced off for the A Flight title, and Louwers won in a battle, 4-6, 7-5, 10-4.
Dans and Louwers also faired well in the A Doubles Flight, advancing to the finals. The duo opened the draw with an 8-2 win over Quevedo and Strike from Seton Hall, and squeaked by Shakhnazarova and Williams from Towson, 8-7(5), to advance to the finals. There, they fell in a closely contested match, 8-6, to Jonjic and Shuren from Delaware.
In the B singles draw, Isabella Wagener won her play-in match over Jessica Josiah of Howard, 6-1, 1-6, 10-7, before falling to Shelby Harris of Mary Washington, 6-3, 6-4. And in D singles, Juweira Hussain lost her opening match, 6-2, 6-1 to Sajela Harlow of Howard. The duo also paired up in the B doubles bracket, dropping their first match, 8-2 to Vasilkova and Easdale of Towson.
