MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Senior David Nuernberg scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute to give the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team its second straight Northeast Conference victory on Friday afternoon, as the Blackbirds defeated Robert Morris, 1-0. LIU Brooklyn (3-8-0) moved to 2-0 in NEC play, while Robert Morris dropped to 0-3 (5-8-1).
The Blackbirds kept the nation's leader in goal, Neco Brett scoreless, despite his three shots on goal. LIU goalkeeper Logan Keys led the team to its first shutout of the season, making seven saves on the day. Robert Morris held the shot and shot on goal advantage, at 16-10 and 8-4.
The Colonials took 10 shots in the first half, but strong play from Keys and the LIU defense kept Robert Morris from finding the back of the net, with five saves coming in the first. The Blackbirds took four shots, including two from Tanner Sica, but could not get themselves on the board.
Coming out of halftime, LIU Brooklyn converted 14 minutes in with the eventual game-winner. Nuernberg won the ball 35 yards out, and took a shot that caught RMU keeper Brenden Alfery off his line and sailed over his head under the crossbar, for Nuernberg's second goal of the season.
The Blackbirds attempted to increase their lead in the last 30 minutes, taking four more shots, while the Colonials tried to score the equalizer, but two saves from Keys and a strong defensive presence blocked two shots and made a team save to let LIU hold on to its lead and take the eventual victory.
Freshman Isak Doumbia was the leader in shots on the day for LIU, taking four, while Nuernberg and Sica each chipped in two.
