BROOKLYN, N.Y. - A goal from sophomore Naeem Charles in the 64th minute gave the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team its third Northeast Conference win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon.
Despite the Knights (3-10-2, 1-2-1 NEC) outshooting the Blackbirds (4-10-0, 3-2-0 NEC) 17-9, they could not get past LIU's defense and goalkeeper Logan Keys, who made seven saves on the afternoon.
Fairleigh Dickinson's offense came out strong in the beginning of the first half, taking seven shots in the first 20 minutes. The Blackbirds found their rhythm in the next 25 minutes, however, as David Nuernberg managed three shots in the last eight minutes. Neither team could find the back of the net in the first, and would head into the first half scoreless.
The Knights attempted to strike in the beginning of the second half with three shots, before LIU's Brice Merwine took a shot that would just hit the top of the crossbar and fly over.
Ten minutes later, Charles would gain possession near the top of the box, and sent an unassisted shot straight into the right side of the net for the game-winner in the 64th minute. The Blackbirds managed to hold off FDU from finding the equalizer for the duration of the game and held onto the victory, giving them three more points in the NEC standings.
Up next, the Blackbirds play their final regular-season home match of the season, as they host Sacred Heart this Friday, Oct. 31 at 6:00 p.m. at LIU Field.
