PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in its final non-conference match on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 from a penalty kick in overtime to La Salle in Philadelphia, Pa.
The Blackbirds and Explorers battled to a scoreless end of regulation, despite a high shooting game for both teams. La Salle had 17 shots to LIU Brooklyn's 14. The Blackbirds also took five shots on goal.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Logan Keys, who made six saves, started off the game with two saves in the first six minutes. La Salle fired three straight shots in the 12th minute, before possession was returned to the Blackbirds and freshman Brian Paredes took the first shot on goal for LIU.
Both teams had plenty of chances in the first half, including eight shots from LIU, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The second half had fewer opportunities than the first, with both teams taking five shots apiece, including two from senior David Nuernberg. Nuernberg also had the first and only shot for the Blackbirds in overtime, but it landed in the hands of La Salle goalkeeper Mike Kirk.
A foul inside the box in the 93rd minute ended the game, as Keys dove to the left, while the shot went to the right.
Nuernberg led LIU with five shots on the day, while junior Nahuel Medina had three, including two on goal. Seven different Blackbirds took shots during the match.
LIU Brooklyn opens Northeast Conference play on Friday, Oct. 10. The Blackbirds host preseason-favorite Central Connecticut at LIU Field at 6:30 p.m.
