AMHERST, MASS. - The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team dropped its first dual match of the 2014 season Sunday afternoon, as the Blackbirds were beaten by the University of Massachusetts, 6-1. UMass won five of the six singles matches, along with two of the three doubles matchups to take the doubles point.
In the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles spots, LIU fell by identical scores, 6-2. Juniors Sanne Louwers and Katya Yegoreychenko fell at No.1 to Yuliana Motyl and Arielle Griffin, while freshman Marine Dans and senior Brittany Thompson lost at No.2 to Jessica Podlofsky and Aarzoo Malik. Senior Lisa Maas and junior Nancy Zonneveld had LIU's lone win, as they defeated Chanel Glasper and Anna Woosley at No.3 doubles, 6-3.
In the singles match-ups, freshman Marine Dans had her first win in the LIU uniform, as she defeated Podlofsky, 7-5, 6-2 in the No.3 singles spot. Hers would be the lone win for the Blackbirds in singles.
Louwers dropped the No.1 singles matchup to Motyl, 6-2, 6-4, while Mass fell at No.2 singles to Malik, 6-1, 6-4. Yegoreychenko fell to Griffin, 6-0, 6-1 at No.4, while Thompson lost to Woosley, 6-1, 6-0 at No.5 singles. And Zonneveld fell at No.6 singles, 6-3, 6-3, to Glasper.
