BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's track and field team makes the transition to the outdoor stage this week, competing at the Coastal Carolina Invite from March 14-15 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Blackbirds are coming off a successful indoor season, placing second at the Northeast Conference Indoor Championship and crowning a handful of individual champions.
Ja'Mesha Richard, Katrina Anderson and the Blackbirds' 4x400 relay earned the top spot on the podium in February. Richard took home the gold medal in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.60, while Anderson won the 800-meter run in 2:13.79. She also broke the LIU record earlier in the season.
Richard was also third in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash, and eighth in the triple jump, and Anderson contributed points in the 400-meter dash with a third place finish.
The Blackbirds have numerous other athletes who will make an impact this spring. Josephine Watson earned the silver medal in the 400-meter dash and was fourth in the 200, while Anise Cuffee qualified for finals in two events at NECs—the 60 and 400. She also had the eighth fastest time in the conference in the 200 during the season.
Shanice Grant ranked third in the conference in the 60-meter hurdles, while Camille Thomas was fifth. Bryanna Williams, Alea Stevens and Marielena Rivera also all ranked in the top-10 during the season in track events.
In the high jump, Kyaira Wright-Harmon put up the second best score in the conference at 1.70, while Grant ranked fifth. Bryanna Williams was third in the long jump, while Wright-Harmon, Richard and Maria Luzon also all earned spots in the top-10. In the triple jump, Wright-Harmon, Richard and Williams again led the Blackbirds.
After the Coastal Carolina Invite, LIU Brooklyn heads to Austin, Texas, to compete at the Texas Relays from March 26-29.
