PALMAS DEL MAR, PUERTO RICO – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team wrapped up a week in Puerto Rico Thursday with one more victory, as the Blackbirds defeated Big East opponent Providence, by a narrow score of 4-3. With the win, LIU stands at 3-5 overall in dual matches, 1-0 in Northeast Conference play.
 
In doubles, Providence had an early advantage, as LIU forfeited at the No.3 spot, but the Blackbirds would sweep at Nos. 1 and 2, to take the doubles point and the early lead. Freshman Marine Dans and junior Nancy Zonneveld had a win in the No. 2 doubles spot, beating Alana Prinos and Hannah Zangari, 8-4. And junior Sanne Louwers and senior Lisa Maas clinched the point for LIU, with their 8-6 win over Maria Clara Benardez and Oliva Hogan at No.1.
 
With the 1-0 advantage heading into singles, Providence got a point with LIU's forfeit in the No.6 singles spot, to make it 1-1, and the team match up for grabs. The Blackbirds were able to pull out wins in three of the five remaining singles matchups, however, to take the team win.
 
Louwers had a sweep in the No.1 singles spot, as she beat Benardez, 6-3, 6-0, and freshman Marine Dans also won in straight sets at No.3 singles, beating Jennifer DeLuca, 6-1, 6-4. At No.2 singles, Maas fell in three sets to Prinos, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, while freshman Isabella Wagener lost to Karen Ramirez in the No.4 singles spot, 6-2, 6-3. With the split, the two teams were tied, 3-3 for the overall match.
 
Junior Nancy Zonneveld would clinch the win for the Blackbirds with her victory at No.5 singles, where she beat Zangari in three sets, rallying back from a first set loss to take the match, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
 
Up next, the Blackbirds will take on Colgate in a neutral site match at Army, Friday, March 21 at a time to be announced.
