BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Two members of the LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team earned Northeast Conference weekly awards, it was announced by the league Monday. Sophomore Alexis Maldonado was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman Jenn Peters picked up the Co-Rookie of the Week honor.
Maldonado had 13 saves to help the Blackbirds to a 15-8 victory over Manhattan at home last Tuesday. The West Babylon, N.Y. native only allowed three goals in the first half of the game, despite 10 shots from the Jaspers. She averaged a .619 save percentage after playing all 60 minutes. The eight goals allowed were the lowest opponent total of the season.
Peters added three more goals against Manhattan to close out the nonconference schedule, bringing her season total to 20. She took nine shots on the day, including four on goal. Peters also had two assists, to tally five points during the game. This is the second time this season she earns NEC weekly honors.
Up next, the Blackbirds begin their NEC schedule, starting with a game at Saint Francis U. at 3:00 p.m this Friday, April 4. They then head out to Robert Morris the following Sunday for a 12:00 p.m. matchup.
