BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Despite a close first half, the LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team succumbed to a scoring surge from Wagner in the second, and fell to the Seahawks, 19-11.
Freshman Mary McQueen had a hat trick,and Jenn Peters, Brittany Rader, Jesenia Cantres and Colleen Holmes all scored two apiece. Senior Kimberly Kovar also added three assists, but the Seahawks outshot the Blackbirds, 46-20. The Blackbirds led in both draw controls with 18 and ground balls with 10.
Wagner got things going early, scoring off the first draw control 43 seconds into the game. But a yellow card on the Seahawks gave Cantres the tying free position goal moments later.
The Seahawks scored two straight in the next eight minutes to go up by two. Another free position attempt came about for the Blackbirds, with Rader closing the gap to one.
LIU had a couple of shots from McQueen and freshman Danita Stroup with just over 18 munutes to go, but Wagner added one more before McQueen would score her first of the game and 18th of the season.
Wagner pushed the score up to 8-3 before LIU could score again. McQueen added her second goal, with an assist from Jenn Peters after a save from goalkeeper Alexis Maldonado gave posession back to the Blackbirds. Wagner scored one more goal before the half, before Peters would send the Blackbirds into the break down four, at 9-5.
Heading out of halftime, the Blackbirds looked to take control of the game. A winning draw control from Priscilla Lawson-Pires gave LIU the ball. Senior Ashley Delaney found Cantres, who sent the ball into the back of the net, closing Wagner's lead to 9-6 with 28:54 left in the game.
Two more Seahawk goals were scored before Holmes scored her third goal of the season on an assist from Kovar. Wagner then began to pull away, however, scoring six straight. Holmes scored again, on another assist from Kovar, but the Seahawks answered with their 18th goal of the game for a 10-goal lead.
LIU scored two straight to finish off the game, but Wagner moved to 2-1 in the Northeast conference with the 19-11 victory, while the Blackbirds fell to 0-3.
The Blackbirds return home this Sunday, April 13, facing Mount St. Mary's at LIU Field at 11:00 a.m.
