BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team closes out the 2014 regular season this weekend, first hosting Bryant on Friday, April 25 at 4:00 p.m. The following Sunday at 12:00 p.m., the Blackbirds welcome Central Connecticut to LIU Field for Senior Day Live stats and video are available for both matchups above.
"Heading into the last weekend of the season, we are looking to finish strong and not hold anything back," head coach Allison Nuzzi said. "Sunday is senior day, and we plan to honor this group of extraordinary women with a competitive showing and a true team effort."
LAST TIME OUT
The Blackbirds had a short week, facing Sacred Heart in its last regular-season away game. LIU kept it close in the first half but eventually fell to the Pioneers, 16-8. Freshmen Jenn Peters and Danita Stroup continued their standout rookie seasons, each posting a hat trick, while senior Jesenia Cantres chipped in two assists.
After last weekend, LIU Brooklyn is tied for sixth in the NEC standings with Mount St. Mary's and Saint Francis U., with a 1-4 conference record. The Blackbirds sport a 3-3 record at home.
ABOUT LIU BROOKLYN
Sunday will be the final home game for the six seniors on the squad--Ashley Delaney, Kimberly Kovar, Shakoya Smith, Cailyn Cowan, Jesenia Cantres and Trisha Yeoell. All have contributed significantly to help the Blackbirds to their most sucessful season in several years.
As a team, the Blackbirds rank well in the conference statistics on offense, and are tied for third with assists per game at 3.71, fourth in points per game with 13.86, and are fourth in shots per game, shots on goal per game and shot percentage. They also win 11.93 draw controls per game, also good for third in the conference.
"It will be important for us to continue focusing on getting better as a unit, and taking risks," Nuzzi said.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Bryant has already clinched a spot in the conference tournament, and is currently in first in the standings with a 5-0 league record. They have four one-point wins this season, but most recently defeated CCSU by 10 points last Friday. The Bulldogs have the most goals and assists per game in the league, but are only sixth in caused turnovers. Haley Bloom averages 1.21 assists per game, while Lisa Vendel and Lauren Descalzo average 2.47 goals per game.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
Central Connecticut is tied for fourth with Sacred Heart with a 2-3 league record, but has dropped its last two contests.The Blue Devils are in the middle of the pack in most statistical categories, and are led by Amanda Toke, who has scored 30 goals this season. Goalkeeper Morgan Tullar has a 0.399 save percentage.
NEXT TIME OUT
The Blackbirds still have a chance to make it to the postseason and the Northeast Conference Championships as the fourth seed. The top four teams at the end of the regular season earn berths at the home field of the highest seed. Semifinals take place Friday, May 2 before the championship game on Sunday, May 4.
