BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team opens its Northeast Conference schedule this weekend out in Pennsylvania. The Blackbirds first travel to Saint Francis U. on Friday, April 4 for a 3:00 p.m. matchup, before heading to Robert Morris on Sunday, April 6 at 12:00 p.m. Live stats and video are available above.
Last Time Out
LIU Brooklyn is coming off of back-to-back wins, closing out the nonconference schedule with victories against Howard and Manhattan. The Blackbirds earned half the NEC weekly awards over the past two weeks because of their efforts.
During their most recent win, the Blackbirds defeated the Jaspers 15-8, for the lowest goals allowed by LIU this season.
Sophomore Alexis Maldonado had 13 saves, while senior Shakoya Smith led with four goals. Freshmen Jenn Peters, Danita Stroup and Mary McQueen each had a hat trick, while Peters also had two assists.
Leading LIU
Danita Stroup has 29 points this season, on 18 goals and 11 assists, and ranks fourth in the conference in points per game (3.22), while Jenn Peters is right behind with 28 points (20 goals, 8 assists), and is seventh in the conference in goals per game. She has taken 55 shots this season, including 34 on goal, and is second in the conference with 6.11 shots per game.
Junior Brittany Rader leads in draw controls with 27, while senior Jesenia Cantres has 12 caused turnovers.
As a team, the Blackbirds rank fourth in the conference in goals per game (10.33) assists per game (3.89), and points per game (14.22). They are also third in draw controls per game with 12.11. The Blackbirds also make 46 percent of their shots, to rank second in the conference.
Scouting the Red Flash
Saint Francis U. is 3-5 on the season, and head into the game with a 13-6 win over Kennesaw State. Danielle Conwell leads both SFU and the conference with 40 points on the season, scoring 24 goals and adding 16 assists, while Rachel Larson is the other member of the squad who has double-digit goals, with 21. The Red Flash lead the conference in shot percentage, with .503.
Scouting the Colonials
Robert Morris sports a 6-3 record, but has fallen in its last two games. The Colonials are 4-0 at home, and have seven athletes who have accumulated more than 10 points, and 13 who have scored. Kristin Yoviene and Corey Karwacki have 18 goals apiece this season. Robert Morris is first in the NEC in goals per game, points per game and draw controls per game.
