STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team improved to 2-1 in Northeast Conference play Saturday afternoon, as the Blackbirds defeated Wagner, 7-0 on the road.
The Blackbirds opened the match by winning the doubles point with ease. Junior Sanne Louwers and senior Lisa Maas shut out their Seahawk opponents, beating Sarah Dionisio and Cassidy Lessard in the No.1 spot, 8-0. And freshman Isabella Wagener and junior Katya Yegoreychenko beat Kari Rezac and Madison Pausch, 8-2 in the No.2 spot, to clinch the doubles point. Freshman Marine Dans and junior Nancy Zonneveld were winning, 5-2 in the No.3 doubles spot when their match was stopped because the point had been clinched.
In singles, the Blackbirds continued to dominate, as no LIU player dropped a set, and the Blackbirds only lost a total of 10 games in the whole team match. Senior Lisa Maas and freshman Marine Dans had the two most dominating wins, as they both shut out their opponents, 6-0, 6-0. Maas beat Pautsch in the No.2 spot, while Dans defeated Jurgielwicz at No.3. Junior Sanne Louwers dropped just one game in her defeat of Dionisio, 6-1, 6-0 in the No.1 singles spot, while freshman Isabella Wagener only dropped two, beating Jenna Harris, 6-0, 6-2 at No.4. Junior Nancy Zonneveld beat Rezac, 6-1, 6-1, and junior Brittany Thompson beat Lessard at No.6 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
Up next, the Blackbirds will host Albany at the USTA Tennis Center, Sunday, April 6. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
