QUEENS, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team fell to Albany at the USTA National Tennis Center Sunday afternoon, 5-2. With the loss, LIU stands at 6-7 overall this season, 2-1 in the Northeast Conference.
Albany took an early lead over the Blackbirds by sweeping the doubles point. In the No.1 spot, junior Sanne Louwers and senior Lisa Maas fell to Cheryl Kukkonen and Alba Sala, 8-6. At No.2, freshman Isabella Wagener and junior Katya Yegoreychenko fell to Mireille Hermas and Paulina Torres, 8-5. And at No.3, freshman Marine Dans and junior Nancy Zonneveld dropped an 8-5 decision to Kirsten Scott and Catherine Crummey, 8-5.
With Albany up, 1-0, the Blackbirds started to make strides in singles. Junior Sanne Louwers had a straight set win in the No.1 spot, beating Kukkonen, 6-0, 6-2. And freshman Marine Dans defeated Kirsten Scott in the No.3 spot, 6-4, 6-2. But Albany had straight set wins at Nos. 4 and 5 to retake the lead. At No.4 singles, Torres defeated Wagener, 6-2, 6-3, and at No.4, Sala beat Zonneveld, 6-2, 6-0.
Up 3-2, Albany and LIU had battles going at Nos.2 and 6 singles. In both matches, the Great Danes ended up on top. At No.2 singles, senior Lisa Maas fell to Hermas after winning the first set, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and at No.6 singles, junior Brittany Thompson rallied to win the second set, but couldn't hold on to the lead, falling to Crummey, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3. In the end, Albany took the win, 5-2.
Up next for the Blackbirds, they will take on NEC foe St. Francis Brooklyn, Saturday, April 11, at a location and time to be determined.
