CORAOPOLIS, Pa. – Kyaira Wright-Harmon was crowned the winner in the high jump to start things off for the LIU Brooklyn women's track and field team at the first day of the Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship hosted by Robert Morris University.
Wright-Harmon, a sophomore, placed first in the event with a jump of 1.70m, also putting the Blackbirds on the board with 10 points. She was eighth in the long jump as well at 5.26m.
Also adding points for the Blackbirds on the first day was Bryanna Williams. The junior was second in the long jump with a leap of 5.46m to score eight points.
In the first track event of the day, the 100-meter dash, three Blackbirds advanced into finals tomorrow. Sophomore Shanice Grant won her heat in 11:85 and is seeded second, while Bryanna Williams is fifth at 12.23. Ja'Mesha Richard was sixth at 12.33.
The 200-meter dash belongs to the Blackbirds, with five advancing to the eight-person final. Grant, Shakia Williams, Anise Cuffee, Richard, and Josephine Watson will all look to contribute valuable points in the final tomorrow afternoon.
In the 400-meter dash, Watson will be seeded second with her time of 57.46 today, while Cuffee is sixth at 58.00.
In the 800-meter run, indoor champion Katrina Anderson will look tomorrow to take the crown in the outdoor event, as she will be seeded second with a time of 2:20.09.
Grant, Richard and Camille Thomas will all make an appearance in tomorrow in the 100-meter hurdles, as the second, third and eighth seed, while there are also three Blackbirds in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles. Alea Stevens is the third seed at 1:03.53, Marielena Rivera is seventh and Brittany McLain is eighth.
The champion will be crowned tomorrow, with action starting at 9:00 a.m.
