NEWARK, Del. – Penalty kicks doomed the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team in the first half, as the Blackbirds dropped a 2-0 decision to Delaware on Sunday afternoon.
LIU held off the Blue Hens for the majority of the game, a team receiving votes in the preseason NSCAA poll. Despite a 17-4 shot advantage, Delaware's only two goals came from penalty kicks in the 13th and 32nd minute. Redshirt sophomore Logan Keys had five saves.
The Blackbirds were held to a defensive position for much of the first half, where the Blue Hens too the majority of their shots. LIU kept Delaware to only six shots in the second half.
LIU Brooklyn stormed out of the gates in the second, taking possession after several Delaware corner kicks in the 46th minute. An LIU corner kick from junior Nahuel Medina at the 48 minute mark fed the ball to junior Tanner Sica, whose shot was blocked.
Possession stayed with LIU and Medina once again took the kick, which found Tyler Draovitch, but his shot was just high.
The Blackbirds took two more shots, but both sailed above the crossbar. Senior Brice Merwine attempted to put LIU on the board in the 68th minute, while sophomore Raffi Gregorian took the first shot of his college career two minutes later.
LIU Brooklyn plays its home opener on Sunday, Sept. 7 versus Saint Joseph's on 1:00 p.m. at LIU Field.
