BROOKLYN, N.Y.- The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team fell to Rider, 5-2, at home on Wednesday evening. Senior forward Brice Merwine continued to produce offensively for the Blackbirds, scoring both goals. It was his second double-goal game in two matches.
Rider led in shots, 16-14, with LIU Brooklyn taking most of its shots in the second half. The Blackbirds outshot the Broncs 11-6 in the last 45 minutes.
Rider scored its first three goals within 10 minutes to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. But the Blackbirds put themselves right back in contention, 32 minutes in. A corner kick sent the ball to junior midfielder Tanner Sica, who headed it to Merwine for LIU's first goal of the game.
Coming out of the break, the Blackbirds closed the gap to one to start off. Merwine put the ball in the back of the net 51st minute, after a foul inside the box gave LIU a penalty kick opportunity.
A couple of corner kicks gave the Broncs possession, and two more goals. The Blackbirds had a number of shot opportunities in the second half, as well as six corner kicks, but could not find the back of the net.
Merwine led with seven shots, including five on goal, while senior forward David Nuernberg took two shots on goal. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Logan Keys made seven saves.
LIU Brooklyn plays once more at home this week, on Friday. Sept. 10. The Blackbirds take on Columbia at LIU Field at 7:00 p.m.
