BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Brice Merwine scored for the third time in three games, but the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Columbia on Friday evening at LIU Field.
Shot attempts were low in the first half, with each team only taking one in the first 20 minutes of the game. Columbia got on the board first in the 27th minute. Offsides plagued both teams throughout the first 45 minutes.
The Blackbirds were able to take four more shots,, but were unable to find the back of the net in the first half.
Coming out halftime, LIU put themselves right back in the game when sophomore Raffi Gregorian found sophomore Naeem Charles, who scored his first career goal as a Blackbird and tied the game at 1-1 in the first 47 seconds of the second half.
The duo of Merwine and junior Tanner Sica struck again just five minutes later. A cross from Sica put the ball near the right side of the net, and Merwine sent the ball back into the net to give LIU the 2-1 advantage. It was Sica's third assist to Merwine in three games.
Columbia tied it right back at 2-2 just two minutes later. A rebounded shot landed right back in front of Columbia's Jack Gagne, who converted to push the score to 3-2.
LIU stayed right with the Lions for the rest of the game, but could not land any successful shot opportunities, as Columbia took the win.
Columbia led in shots 13-9, while LIU goalkeeper Logan Keys made four saves.
The Blackbirds next head to NJIT on Sept. 17 for a 7:00 p.m. game
