BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 18 George Mason on Alumni Day on Sunday afternoon at LIU Field. Goalkeeper Cole Palmer had seven saves in his second start of the year.
Despite 18 shots with eight on goal from the Patriots, the Blackbirds only gave up one goal the entire game, coming in the 14th minute. The Blackbirds had trouble finding opportunities, however, taking four shots total.
George Mason's lone goal came after three consecutive saved shots early in the first half. A feed from the right corner gave the Patriots the lead they would hold onto for the duration of the game.
Senior forward David Nuernberg and sophomore forward had the only two shots of the half for LIU, both coming early in the game. Nuernberg first attempted to strike at 7:18, but sent the ball wide, while Charles had a chance in the 12th minute, but the ball sailed just above the net.
Junior midfielder Tanner Sica attempted to even out the score in the 57th minute with a shot just wide. The Blackbirds played strong defense throughout the second half, keeping the nationally-ranked Patriots from scoring despite nine shots in the second 45 minutes.
Nuernberg had the final equalizing opportunity in the 78th minute but sent the ball wide.
LIU Brooklyn is back in action this Friday, Sept. 26 at Howard in Washington, D.C. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
