WASHINTGON, D.C. – Four goals from four different players lifted the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team to its first win of the season on Friday afternoon, a 4-1 defeat of Howard at Greene Stadium.
The Blackbirds were in control the entire 90 minutes, taking 13 shots while only letting the Bison take five. LIU also had eight shots on goal, compared to Howard's three.
Senior forward David Nuernberg, who took two shots on the day, scored the only goal of the half at the 17-minute mark. A shot from Isak Doumbia was rebounded in the box, and Nuernberg's shot from 18 yards out put LIU up 1-0.
The Blackbirds had four more shots in the first half, but did most of their damage coming out of the break. Just a minute into the second half, junior midfielder Tanner Sica passed the ball from the 35-yard line, straight to senior forward Brice Merwine who headed it past Howard goalkeeper Eric Hamilton for the 2-0 lead. It was Merwine's seventh goal of the season.
Thirteen minutes later, junior midfielder Nahuel Medina gave the Blackbirds the 3-0 lead. After regaining possession from two foul calls on LIU, a long pass from Sica sent to Medina helped him slip a shot from the 10 yard line into the back of net at 59:57. It was Sica's fifth assist of the season.
Both teams would battle back and forth for the next 20 minutes. Junior redshirt Tyler Draovitch subbed in at the 80:23 mark and would score just 25 seconds into his playing time, after a corner kick from senior Nick Caveretta gave Draovitch the shot and the Blackbirds the 4-0 lead.
The Bison stopped LIU from the shutout at 84:32 on a free kick.
Six different LIU players took shots on Friday, including two each from Merwine and Doumbia.
The Blackbirds conclude their nonconference schedule on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1:00 p.m. at La Salle.
