BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team is back in action with two games at LIU Field this week. The Blackbirds first take on Rider on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 6:00 p.m. before facing Columbia on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:00 p.m. Live stats and video are available for both games.
LAST TIME OUT
LIU Brooklyn suffered a close 4-3 loss in double overtime to Saint Joseph's on Sunday. Senior forward Brice Merwine scored the first two goals of the season for LIU, while freshman Nathaniel Brown knocked in his first career goal. The Blackbirds took more shots (16) on Sunday than they had in the first two previous games combined, and kept the Hawks to only 18.
ABOUT THE BLACKBIRDS
Merwine is now tied for third in the conference statistics in points with four, as well as tied for fourth in shots and points per game. He is also tied for third with two goals. Junior Tanner Sica and senior David Nuernberg have each taken four shots with two on goal, while redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Logan Keys has made 18 saves.
ABOUT THE BRONCS
Rider is currently 0-1-1, falling to NEC member Robert Morris,, 3-0, and tying Saint Joseph's 1-1 last Friday. Justin Veltri has scored the only goal for Rider this season. The Broncs average 14 shots a game, while their opponents average 16. Goalkeeper David Pastuna has a 1.80 goals against average and made 11 saves total.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Broncs lead the series, 8-4. Last year, LIU played at Rider, and fell, 1-0, in double overtime. The Blackbirds last beat the Broncs in 2011.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Columbia is 1-0 and plays against tonight against Marist. They defeated Michigan at home, 3-0, to start out the season. Midfielder Tyler Arnone scored twice, while Colin McAtee had one goal. Columbia had 14 shots.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Blackbirds are 9-12-4 against the Lions, last defeating them in 2008 in double overtime. In 2013, Columbia got the win at home against LIU.
