With the time running down in the first half and the contest still scoreless, freshman Rasmus Hansen made a run down the left side and knocked the ball towards goal. A pair of SHU defenders looked as though they would clear the ball, but it ricocheted into the back of the net for an own goal to give LIU a 1-0 lead. Keys concluded the period by making his fifth save of the game in the 41st minute, stopping a shot from Saunchez.

In the 70th minute, Guscott broke away from the Pioneer defense, going one-on-one with the keeper, but senior Tucker Hackett was there for the save. The LIU defense had two consecutive blocked shots in the 75th minute, but Saunchez got a shot off that hit the crossbar and the Pioneers' Callum Smith scored a header goal early in the 76th minute off of Saunchez's shot to trim the LIU lead to 3-1. The goal broke a streak of 378 minutes and two seconds that the Blackbirds had kept the opposition out of the scoring column
