NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The LIU Brooklyn women's bowling team concluded the first day of competition at the Fairleigh Dickinson Jamboree on Friday. 30 collegiate teams have traveled to North Brunswick, N.J. to take part in the three-day tournament. Competitors include eight top-ten teams and 19 from the top-25.
After five traditional matches, the No. 14 Blackbirds stand in tenth place with a total pinfall of 4,712. No. 2 Arkansas State leads the field with a total of 5,400, followed by No. 6 Sam Houston State, No. 4 Fairleigh Dickinson, No. 9 McKendree and No. 5 Vanderbilt.
LIU dropped its first match of the day to No. 23 Monmouth, 838-886. But the Blackbirds were able to get back on track with a win against No. 19 Tulane, 996-930. Sophomore Kristina Genova led the Blackbirds in the match with 215.
Genova once again led LIU in their match against No. 17 Delaware State. The sophomore posted a team high of 236, but the Blackbirds came up short, 923-954.
In the final two matches of the day, LIU Brooklyn faced two top-ten teams. The Blackbirds dropped their match to No. 9 McKendree, 909-994. But LIU was then able to defeat No. 6 Sam Houston State, 1046-1012 in the final match-up of the day. Senior Natasha Bidwell led the team with a score of 256, and freshman Kayla Johnson also guided the Blackbirds to the win with 232.
LIU Brooklyn will continue competition in North Brunswick tomorrow. Five more traditional matches will begin at 9:00am.
