BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's cross country team is set to compete in the Northeast Conference Championships this Saturday, hosted by Bryant University.
The Blackbirds are coming off a successful showing at the Albany Invitational, where Esther Jean-Louis broke the school 5K record time of 19:11.90. Jean-Louis crossed the finish line in Albany with a time of 19:11.70, finishing 40th overall in a 186-competitor field.
Jean-Louis' classmates, Adjovi Simpini and Kharyn Ethridge will also compete this weekend, after finishing second and third on the Blackbirds roster in Albany.
Shayla Wigand, who earned NEC Rookie of the Week honors earlier in the season, will look to cap off a notable rookie campaign. The sophomore owns the best average mile time of 6:06.3, since LIU brought back the sport last year.
The Blackbirds have traveled to Smithfield, R.I. once this season already, when the team competed in the Nassaney Invitational. LIU finished 11th overall in team competition during their trip in mid-September.
The 5K will begin at 12:00pm in Smithfield, R.I. Ten NEC teams will be in attendance on Saturday, including defending champion, Sacred Heart.
