BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn men's golf team heads down to Daytona Beach, Fla. for the 2015 Northeast Conference Golf Championships at the LPGA International from May 1-3.
It will be the second time this season the Blackbirds compete on the par-72 Hills Course, having hosted and won the Lonnie Barton Invitational at the same location in March. The Blackbirds finished ahead of Saint Francis U. by six strokes, while also placing ahead of NEC teams Central Connecticut, Sacred Heart, Bryant, Wagner and St. Francis Brooklyn.
LIU Brooklyn finished no worse than tied for sixth in the spring in four tournaments.. In addition to victory in Florida, they placed second at the Seahawk Spring Invitational, fifth at the UConn Invitational and tied for sixth in the highly competitive and 23-team Towson Invitational.
Upperclassmen
Rhys Jones and
Stewart Gray both performed well this spring. Jones, the lone senior, placed eighth at the Seahawk Invitational for his top finish of the year. He also made a nine stroke improvement on day two at the Towson Invitational and shot 75, his best round of the year.
Gray battled back from injury in the fall and concluded the regular season tied for ninth at the UConn Invitational. The junior's best finish came at the Towson Invitational, where he tied for sixth to lead the Blackbirds. He also tied for ninth at the Lonnie Barton Invitational and 12
th at the Seahawk Invitational.
All four underclassmen have made a major impact on the team this year as well. Sophomore
George Williams was second at the Lonnie Barton Invitational and Seahawk Invitational, and was named NEC Golfer of the Week in March.
Sophomore
Jake Spearpoint is also performing well this spring. His top finish came at the Towson Invitational, where he tied for eighth. He was ninth at the Seahawk Invitational, and also tied for ninth at the Lonnie Barton Invitational
Kyle Maihi, LIU's one newcomer, tied for ninth with Spearpoint and Gray at the Lonnie Barton. His best finish came at the Seahawk Invitational, where he tied for fifth with five birdies through two rounds.
Sophomore
Rodrigo Munoz was 25
th at the Seahawk Invitational in the spring, while his best finish of the season was in the fall at the Connecticut Cup, where he placed second.
The 2015 NEC Championship is a three-day, 54 hole event. Tee times will begin at 8:00 a.m. on May 1.
