LAST TIME OUT
The Blackbirds (16-32, 9-15 NEC) finished the Northeast Conference season dropping three of four against CCSU. With the losses, LIU was eliminated from the postseason. Bryant (15-5 NEC) and Wagner (13-7) clinched spots with their wins last weekend, while Sacred Heart (10-10) and Mount St. Mary's (9-11) currently hold the third and fourth place spots heading into the last weekend of play.
NEC HONOREE
Sophomore Bobby Maxwell was recognized by the Northeast Conference for his outstanding work on the mound this weekend, as he was named the NEC Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the league office Monday. It is the third NEC Pitcher of the Week honor of his career, and the second this season.
Maxwell was magnificent during Saturday's doubleheader against Central Connecticut. The right-hander started both halves of the double dip, firing a total of 10.0 scoreless innings while allowing only two hits. Maxwell went the distance in the opener (Game 2 of the series), shutting out the Blue Devils over 7.0 frames and registering a 6-0 victory. The 6-foot-4 sophomore surrendered only two singles and one base on balls while cruising to the complete-game win. An infield hit in the third inning and two-out single in the seventh was all the CCSU offense could muster up against the LIU righty. Being that he needed only 75 pitches to complete the first half of the doubleheader, Maxwell took the mound for the start of the nightcap. He added 3.0 more hitless frames to his day's work before giving way to the Blackbirds' bullpen.
SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS
UMass Lowell will also wrap up its season in the series against the Blackbirds. The River Hawks are currently 14-26 overall, and 10-10 in the America East. Most recently, they were swept by America East opponent Stony Brook (5-3, 9-3, 9-0).
Sophomore Ian Strom is the team's top hitter at present, as he's batting .328 this season, with 19 RBI. Senior Matt Sanchez is hitting .324 with 11 extra base hits, and a team high 18 stolen bases. And senior Danny Mendick leads the team with 25 RBI and 15 doubles.
